552 Premium: Bobby Clampett on the Impact Zone

552: Bobby Clampett was the Low Amateur at the 1979 US Open and the 1980 Masters. He played on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour in addition to being a network golf announcer/commentator. After playing with over 1,000 amateurs at more than 220 Pro-Ams he noticed something about their divots that separates high handicappers from Tour players. “...the Touring pros had a swing bottom approximately 4 inches in front of the center of the golf ball. For every inch amateurs were behind that 4 inches, equated to, on average, 4 strokes per inch!" In this week’s episode Bobby talks with host Fred Greene about his history, greatest influences, the Golfing Machine, and his effective method of instruction called The Impact Zone.

Bobby is going to be giving a “Golfing In The Zone Clinic” at Michael Murphy’s Golf In The Kingdom Marathon charity event on September 11-12, 2016 at Peacock Gap in San Rafael, CA. For more information and to register for the event, visit http://itp-international.org/GKM2016.

550 Premium: The Yips: What They Are and How to Cure Them with Jim Waldron

550 Premium: There are at least five different type of the Yips in golf. Full Swing, Chipping, Pitching, Bunker, and the least common but most talked about: Putting. Our guest is one of our all-time favorite golf instructors who actually specializes in eliminating the yips, Jim Waldron of the Balance Point Golf Schools. According to Jim, there are three contributing factors to the yips. Mental. Emotional. Physical (mechanics). “By definition, the yips (flinching) are unconscious. No one tries to get the yips.”   Jim also touches on the contributing factors, examples, and devising a program that will eliminate them and “Flinch-Proof Your Game”, and curing a scratch golfer who’s yips got so bad, he handicap went up to a 12. Jim cured him in 4 hours.

Think about it as a electric surf board and/or a skate board. Just secure your bag, plug in your phone, put your beer on ice, grab the remote control, step aboard and off you go! Our guest is Patrick Pires to discuss the benefits and fun this product brings to the game. 546: Common question: What’s the best way to get my child interested in playing golf? Finally an answer that works, is fun, and has a school curriculum designed by education professionals. SNAG (Starting New at Golf) is the best “first-touch” program I’ve seen. It uses big clubs & balls, bright colors and language that all children would understand. 543 Premium: 70% of All Golfers Play The Wrong Ball! AND Kicking It with Soul Kix.

543 Premium: On any given round, there’s only one piece of golf equipment that is used on every shot…the ball. What most amateur players don’t realize is that 70% of all golfers are using the wrong ball, according to this week’s guest Dominic Selfa of Bridgestone Golf who sits down with host Fred Greene. Getting fitted for a golf ball is as important as getting fitted for clubs. So may players play a Titleist ProV1 because that’s what’s on the tour or is the most expensive. But that doesn’t mean it will help your game. The reality is that if you don’t have a swing speed over 100mph or can compress the ball to get a good amount of backspin, that is the wrong ball for you. Learn more about the new line of Bridgestone balls and how they are leading the way for every golfer to get properly fitted for the correct ball.

For this Premium Episode, we also have another conversation from the ING Conference  with Terry McEwen of SoulKix, an innovative shoe team that encourages the quirky/weird/artistic/different/inspired/ and “off-beaten” soul to create the own path of shoes. It’s actually a really fascinating story of a father helping his son find a mission and path in life after the young man, at 19, was homeless living in a makeshift tent on top of a skyscraper in San Francisco. With Father’s Day coming, it’s a beautiful story of love and success.

541 Premium: Golf 8.5 with LPGA Teaching Hall of Famer Kay McMahon, plus Elizabeth Hall on the World Golf Hall of Fame

541 Premium: Kay McMahon is in the LPGA Teaching Hall of Fame who established eduKaytion golf dedicated to quality and simplified instruction with her signature Golf 8.5 approach. Too much going on in your head for each shot? With Golf 8.5 there are 4 pre-swing steps followed by only 4.5 in-swing positions which produce a classic golf swing for players at ANY level from beginner to scratch. Golf 8.5 is easily understood, dimple, doable, repeatable, and highly successful.

For Premium Access subscribers, we also share our interview with Elizabeth Hall from the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Florida, which will also be the location for next year’s ING Conference. This is the first interview captured at the 26th Annual ING (International Network of Golf) conference in Midway, Utah. I conducted 16 interviews and captured a lot of video from this conference and will be sharing it all with you in upcoming episodes.

540 Premium: Better Putting Distance Control with Pinehurst Director of Instruction, Eric Alpenfels

540: Eric Alpenfels is the Director of Instruction at Pinehurst Golf Resort and has been an instructor at Pinehurst for 33 years. He's also the co-author of the book Instinct Putting. Co-authored by Bob Christina, PhD, and Cary Heath, PhD, this book's research shows that  looking at the hole, "target vision", improves your distance control on long putts. In this curated version of this week's episode, we discuss how instinct putting works and how it can help.

We also discuss Pinehurst Golf Resort and the nine courses, plus the 18 hole putting course. And we touch on which course to play when you visit depending on your skill level, some great stories about the history of the PGA Tour at Pinehurst, the Pinehurst Golf Academy, and more.

Here's a video excerpt from today's show:

Would you be interested in traveling with Fred Greene and some Golf Smarter listeners for a weekend of golf? Can you please take a minute to answer three questions about a possible trip to either Pinehurst of Thailand in Fall of 2017?

539 Premium: A Unique 18 Hole Golf Course in Three 6-Hole Loops...in Thailand! with Mark Siegel

539 Premium: Our guest this week is Mark Siegel of Golf Asia, a golf travel agency that designs golf tours throughout Asia. This time we talk about the Nikanti Golf Club which is an hour outside of Bangkok, Thailand. Nikanti is the first course I'm aware of that has a layout of 18 holes that are designed as 3x6 vs 2x9. We often complain that golf takes too long, but wouldn't it be great if you could choose to play just 6, 12, or the full 18 holes?

Their website says that "Nikanti Golf Club challenges the ordinary and sets a new standard in style and substance in golf in Thailand."

Ever wonder how all that detailed yardage information finds their way to your GPS unit and mobile apps? I came across a guy who works for BestApproach.com while he was mapping out a course in my neighborhood. So I grabbed my phone and shot a short interview with him about exactly what he was doing. Enjoy!

537: Conor Jackson played Major League Baseball for seven seasons with Arizona, Oakland, and Boston. But he didn’t take up golf until after he retired from the Big Leagues. He was lured in by charity tournaments, discovered how challenging it was and, like many of us, fell in love. Even with a career .271 batting average, golf hasn’t come easy for him.

Here's a video excerpt of today's episode when I asked Conor if it's easy for baseball players to pick up golf

536 Premium: Ten Reasons Why I Hate to Play Golf With You! featuring writer Rory Hughes

536: We all have our pet peeves that irritate us when playing golf with others. Like talking on the phone. Forgetting (or making up) your score. Not having cash with you to pay your debts or the cart girl. Saying “I never play like this”, and more. Writer and High School English teacher/Golf Coach Rory Hughes recently published an article on this topic called “10 Things I Hate About You” and this week we break it down and have a lot of fun coming up with some more.

Rory’s latest piece is about getting your child to hopefully love the same sports as you.

If you’d like to get a glimpse of one of fun embarrassing points Fred brings up, watch this short video clip.

535 Premium: Lessons from The Masters On How to Reduce Stress, Make Better Swings, and Shoot Lower Scores with Jamie Zimron

535: The 2016 Masters was an amazing showcase of professional golf at the highest level. But upon closer inspection, it also showed that there are moments of the PGA Tour that look an awful lot like weekend golf by mid and high handicappers. Dropping the ball in the water two shots in a row, 3 and 4 putting from inside 10 feet, trying to make difficult shots in windy conditions, all these and more come from a place that’s common to all golfers…poor decision making. And all that leads to stress which have disastrous effects on your swing and your round. This week we speak with old friend Jamie Zimron, LPGA, aka The Golf Sensei on how to reduce stress which leads to better swings and lower scores.

532 Premium: Master your chipping with RULE of 12 and get closer to the pin every time! with Dave Johnson

532: Dave Johnson is the longtime Director of Instruction at Rooster Run Golf Course in Petaluma, CA. In this interesting conversation, Dave talks about how we can turn 3 shots into 2 around the green knocking 5-10 strokes off each round! By chipping using a putting stroke with your irons, the RULE of 12 will help you gauge how far the ball will roll once it lands on a level dry putting surface.

Dave also talks about how being a contrarian has made him a better golf instructor, the lessons he’s learned from a 9 year old, how hand/eye coordination is overrated for golf, and his most influential teachers.

531 Premium: Forgiving Drivers, Fairway Woods, and Hybrids Designed for Amateur Golfers Designed by The Pope of Slope - Dean Knuth

531 Premium: Dean Knuth is known as the Pope of Slope because during his years at the USGA he created the Rating/Slope system to provide golfers with more information about the difficulty of a course, other than yardage. With all his years working there, he was always an advocate for the amateur golfer. That’s why he’s currently designing and manufacturing a line of Drivers, Fairway Woods, and Hybrids designed to be much easier to hit and more forgiving than any other mass marketed club. In this episode, Dean talks about the High Heat line of clubs, why so many players are hitting the ball longer and straighter than ever before, and an easy to understand definition of what Slope is and how to use it.

Regular price for the Driver is $399, but Golf Smarter listeners can save $70 on a High Heat Driver at KnuthGolf.com by entering “Golf Smarter” during checkout when you’re asked how you heard about them.

LIVE ON TUESDAY: The Pope of Slope & High Heat Drivers

Please join us this Tuesday, March 15 at NoonET/9aPT, for a live conversation with Dean Knuth, aka "The Pope of Slope". We'll be live on BLAB @GolfSmarter and it's free to participate.

In our last episode (#530), Mike Jamison introduced us to Dean and his Knuth Golf clubs. Dean has had an illustrious and important career in the golf world.  During his tenure at the USGA Dean developed the Course Rating and Slope system, and he's recognized as the top expert in the world on handicapping and course rating.

Dean's latest venture is golf club design and development, producing the High Heatdrivers, fairway woods, and hybrids. These clubs have been all the rage at the last two PGA Merchandise shows including this praise from Gary Van Sickle, sportswriter for SI & Golf.com. Gary called High Heat “the most significant technological innovation in golf equipment…and arguably the most exciting new club in a year that lacked dramatic innovations.”

BLAB is like doing a radio talk show, but with video live on the web. The conversation will be published as a Golf Podcast episode later that day, but when you join us live, you can participate with your own questions about his latest products, how to use the Rating/Slope vs yardage to determine which tees are best to play from, and more.
