Members #416 - Jon Morley loves golf, and loves to compete. But he’s not committed enough to get to a championship level. So he and some friends came up with the Mediocre Golf Association in 2006. Since then he’s grown the program with chapters around the world, but been able to maintain their sense of irreverence intact. Their competitive season starts in March and you have the opportunity to join or create a chapter in your area. One chapter in Ireland only has 2 active members, so check out mgatour.com and start a chapter yourself!

Next up for Members Only, Jon joins us for Part2 of the conversation with more stories and reasons to join the Mediocre Golf Association.

Members Only #415 - Kendric Kimizuka is the the Associate Golf Pro at Kauai Lagoons Golf Course in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii. Kauai Lagoons also hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in 1991. Only few minutes from the airport, Kauai Lagoons is on the property of the Marriott Hotel & Beach Club at Kauai Lagoons. Kendric discusses the best way to improve your play in the prevalent Hawaiian trade winds, in addition to giving playing advice to his favorite holes on the course. Check GolfSmarter.com for pictures from the course.

#414 - The 1st of 2 episodes from courses in Kauai, Hawaii. Here we meet the Director of Golf from Poipu Bay Golf Course, Craig Sasada. From the “sunny, southern” part of Kauai, Poipu Bay GC hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 1997-2006. Here’s one of those great courses that fall in the category of courses from the Tour that is always fun to play but is also not as tough as courses that feature a Major, like Torrey Pines.

For more, there's video and photos on our blog at GolfSmarter.com

Part 2 is a Members Only episode that focuses on Kaui Lagoons Golf Club in Lihue, which is located on the coast in the middle of the island.

For Members Only #413 - In part2 of our conversation about the GolfBoard, we’re joined by co-founder and Technical Director Mike Radenbaugh. Where our last conversation was about the business of a golf tech start-up, this time we get into the (pun completely intended) nuts and bolts of why the GolfBoard can be a successful revenue stream for golf courses and a blast for golfers of all ages and skill levels. Host Fred Greene picks Mike’s brain about the board, motor, battery, wheels, speed, balance...you get the point.

If you've ever gone snowboarding, surfing, or skateboarding, now you can be the first one on your course to bring it all together on the GolfBoard.

#412 - Paul Hodge is a young entrepreneur who is bringing an entirely new twist to golf in the hopes of getting more young people interested in playing by making it more fun. The easy to ride electric GolfBoard makes getting from one shot to the next just as fun as hitting a great drive. The GolfBoard speeds up the game, is easy for everyone to ride, has less impact on a course than a golf cart, and allows golfers to surf the golf course in a way that feels similar to snowboarding, surfing or skateboarding.

Paul extended a generous offer to the GOLF SMARTER community. Use the checkout code "GolfSmarter" and you'll receive free shipping inside the continental US or $200 off the shipping from anywhere else in the world.

Next, for Members Only, we'll meet the person who is in charge of all the technical aspects of the GolfBoard and how they've modified the concept to work for golf.

For Members Only #411 - World class putter designer Kenny Giannini returns to discuss each of the components that go into creating a great putter. Whether you purchase one of Kenny's designs or from a major manufacturer, if you want to lower your scores, your putter is no place to scrimp. From this conversation, you'll become more informed on each element of a putter, why it works, and what works best for you.

Nov 14, 2013

#410 - Kenny Giannini has created putters for Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Mark O’Meara and “pretty much everyone”. He also was the first putter designer for the Ben Hogan Co., and the first to design milled faced putters for Cleveland Golf. Now he’s creating some of the best putters on the market for us at KennyGianniniPutters.com. In the first of 2 conversations, we discuss his history, philosophy, and why spending most of your club budget on Drivers is a big mistake.

http://KennyGianniniPutters.com

In part 2 of the conversation for Members Only, Kenny and host Fred Greene discuss the various elements involved in building a putter and what the golf consumer should be aware of in making a purchase. We also discuss the value of a putter fitting with a skilled fitter.

#409 for Members Only - Topping the ball? Did someone say you lifted your head? Tony Manzoni gets pretty fired up about these misconceptions that many golfers have about those consistently frustrating errors like throwing the hands away from the body, bringing the club straight back, or rotating the body too quickly. In this Members Only episode, Tony explains why they occur and what to look for in a teacher who understands the mechanics of a swing.

Both Tony's book and DVD; "The Lost Fundamental - One Simple Move, Better Golf Forever" are ONLY available in our Golfers'Mart at GolfSmarter.com

Oct 29, 2013

#408 - Tony Manzoni is 77 years old and is still shooting par. Lucky for us, he’s also an amazing teacher who has been a listener favorite on GolfSmarter for a long time. Outside of teaching, his instructional book, and DVD, he’s coached the College of the Desert Golf team to 27 Conference championships. His book and DVD “The Lost Fundamental - One Simple Move, Better Golf Forever” are only available at GolfSmarter (app & .com) as individual items or as a combo. Each have received rave reviews. This is part 1 of a 2 part conversation with Tony. We get into more detail on swing mechanics in part 2.

For Members Only #407 - Columnist Shane Ryan of Grantland.com continues with host Fred Greene on his “10 Sensible Rules for Golfing With Others”. Starting at #3, there are some points that are make sense, but then it seems to host Fred Greene that there are some points that just constitute whining about his pet peeves.

Your comments and feedback on this conversation are welcomed at the Facebook GOLF SMARTER group page.

Oct 15, 2013

For Members Only #406- Shane Ryan writes columns and features on golf and other sports for Grantland.com. This summer he wrote an entertaining piece called "10 Sensible Rules for Golfing with Others" but reading it through felt like he was complaining about his pet peeves that can be either annoying or embarrassing during a round. The post states “In a sport so polluted by etiquette and decorum, the possibilities seemed endless”... then observes “the absurd amount of practice you need to put in just to be below average.” You get where he’s going, right? In this episode, we discuss our personal relationships (sic: frustrations) with golf. Some of his points are obvious and I agree, but there are other where I put him to task. Points include “Keep Your Swearing to a Reasonable Level”, “Never Throw or Slam Your Club in Anger”, and "When Your Playing Partner is Struggling, Just Shut Up!". A link to his article is live in the blog at GolfSmarter.com.

Next for Members Only Shane returns to finish his list and spar with host Fred Greene about the pros and cons of each point.

For Members Only #405 - Despite strict USGA guidelines, not all golf clubs perform the same. Golf Professionals play with sticks that are meticulously tailored to their swing. Amateur golfers make purchases based on what the Pros play. No matter their skill level, few golfers take advantage of being fitted for clubs that compliment their swing style. GolfSmarter Podcast host Fred Greene is in the market for a new Driver, fairway driver, and hybrids and was amazed to learn how different each club performs for his swing. During the 90 minute session, join Fred to learn why club head speed, launch angle, spin rate, dispersion are important, and that some older models suit him better than “the newest and the greatest”. **Note: The beep is when Nick mentioned a price that may not be available everywhere.

For this Members Only episode, Fred set up his video gear to record his fitting session with custom club fitter Nick Manzano of The Golf Mart in San Rafael, CA (also featured in episodes #394 & 395). The video, now available in our YouTube/GolfSmarterTV channel, is only a portion of the session, but the podcast episode is the entire fitting.

#404 For Members Only: Jeff Ritter may be one of the most insightful and approachable teachers ever on Golf Smarter. That's why we continue to ask him back on a regular basis. In this episode, host Fred Greene and Jeff cover nuanced information like something as simple, but easy to forget, as feet position at address. Mostly we discuss an email from a listener who's common frustrations are due to the lack of improvement in his game, or lowering of his scores. He notes how he experiences short bursts of progress and just falls back into the same old groove "No Matter What".

Next up for Members Only, Fred records his custom fitting with Nick Manzano (episodes #394 + #395) and amazingly discovers the results of just how different each club manufacturer can be. There will also be a video of the fitting as well.

For Members Only #403 The recent USGA "While We're Young" ad campaign is based on a snarky line from the classic golf film “Caddyshack” delivered by comedian Rodney Dangerfield. The irony of the USGA's focus is that Dangerfield's character is everything they seem to be against to protect the "integrity of the game". Our guest is Kiel Christianson of TravelGolf.com who's recent article "While We're Young -- The Curse of Slow Play" and subsequent online feedback brings the USGA to the mat. In the article and on this episode we focus on his 13 points on how to pick up the pace of play.

For Members Only #402 Fred Shoemaker of Extraordinary Golf returns to introduce us to his new DVD “The Secret to Transforming Your Game” which compliments both books “Extraordinary Golf” and “Extraordinary Putting”. If you’re not familiar with Fred’s methods, be prepared to have your normal perceptions of improvement challenged, “You’ll become a ‘golfer’ when learning becomes more important than the outcome of your shot.” Fred and the teachers from his Top 25 School (Golf Magazine) explore the content of golf, such as swing plane, solid contact, etc., but not in the way you might imagine. The Extraordinary Golf Schools foster a golfers’ ability to self-coach, to integrate deeper and broader aspects of learning, including how to work with information and how to develop a mastery practice. Most golfers are far more able than they believe, but they haven’t learned to develop--or access-- what they have. Extraordinary Golf is a game-changer.

Purchase the Extraordinary Golf DVD “The Secret To Transforming Your Game” right now with your Members Only discount in our Golfers’Mart for $39.95 +s/h. Due to restrictions in our agreement, this price is not public and cannot be shared publicly. Both books are also available in our Golfers’Mart at GolfSmarter.com.

Next up for Members Only Kiel Christianson regular contributor for travelgolf.com addresses slow play, and discovers that he feels the same way as host Fred Greene to the USGA’s “While We’re Still Young” ad campaign. To continue the celebration of 400 episodes, Jeff Ritter returns on #404 for his umpteenth time to talk about the Make The Turn Challenge, and respond to a frustrated listener’s comments about being stuck in his development.

For Members Only #401 - Jim Waldron of Balance Point Golf Schools continues his conversation with host Fred Greene because they still have to eat dessert! In part 2 of our conversation, Jim and Fred follow up on the depth of the Yips, understanding your own consistency, how much improvement can be had with the right teacher, the acceptance of “the possibility of failure”, the art of shot making, and how critically important it is to stay in the moment. The score is the outcome and shouldn’t be important until the round is completely over. Jim quotes Ben Hogan as saying ”The downswing is a terrible time to take a golf lesson”.

GSfMO#400 - Dinner with Jim Waldron of Balance Point Golf Schools is host Fred Greene's last stop on his Oregon golf trip. During a delicious meal at a Portland Thai restaurant they discuss one of Jim's specialties - the YIPS. Jim is a leading expert on curing the yips and golfers from around the world come to him to get help. Most people associate the yips with putting, but it's much broader than that, and it is fixable.

For more information about Jim's schools and individual lessons, visit BalancePointGolf.com

Jim returns for dessert and a Members Only episode which is a longer conversation digging deeper into the yips and associated problems. We also go into depth on how to improve your game by being "mentally engaged and emotionally disengaged".

For Members Only #399 - Ted Joyce doesn’t fit the mental image of a Champions Tour caddie. A young man with a tattered baseball cap that only blocks the top of his bright red hair which completely frames his face, including a large bushy beard that small birds could settle in and raise a family. At first glance, his look and his chosen profession brings about expectations of a deep, unintelligible Scottish brogue. But what you get is a fun, articulate, extremely capable caddie who intimately knows the 4 courses he loops at Bandon Dunes, and understands how to play the game. Ted has been carrying the bag of Champions Tour player Brian Henninger during the 2013 season and shares some stories from inside the ropes of what it’s like to hang out on the practice putting green the week of a tournament.

If you have Bandon Dunes on your target list of places you have to play…and you must at least once…make sure you look up Ted and let him know GOLF SMARTER sent you!

http://BandonDunesGolf.com

Up next, Jim Waldron of Balance Point Golf Schools joins us for two dinner conversations to celebrate episode #400!

Aug 20, 2013

For Members Only #398 - “TRYING to get a hole-in-one is the important part...and sometimes the golf gods reward you.” Grant Rogers, Director of Instruction at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Oregon sits down with host Fred Greene for breakfast to recap Fred’s 36 holes at Old MacDonald and Bandon Dunes courses the previous day. Grant provides tips and insights specifically for playing Bandon’s courses, but shots and swings that you’ll need when you play Links golf. Bandon Dunes is marketed as “Golf As It Was Meant To Be” as these four courses could be the closest thing to Scottish golf that you’ll find in the US. To many, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is golf mecca. Even if you’ve played in Scotland, Bandon Dunes should be on your golf bucket list of places to play, but it’s not for beginners, or non-walkers. There’s no golf carts or cart paths, so be prepared for long and challenging walks. Not like there’s a lot of elevation change, but battling the elements could make you miserable. As Grant offers, “Someone in your group is going to have the most fun, it might as well be you!”

Beyond the four 18 hole courses; Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails, and Old MacDonald, there's a 13 hole Par 3 course called Bandon Preserve, which provides all net proceeds to the Wild Rivers Coast Alliance. Despite it being a par 3 track, it could be the most fun golf course I’ve ever played.

http://BandonDunesGolf.com

Please check out my photo journal from our Bandon Dunes adventure, including my near hole-in-one on #5, in the blog at GolfSmarter.com.....

Next up For Members Only, we’ll stay at Bandon Dunes and meet Ted Joyce, our caddie, who also caddies on the Champions Tour. He tells stories from inside the ropes and tips from the Bandon Dunes trenches.

Golf Smarter for Members Only #397– “With swimming as in golf, there are a lot of little moving parts that require your attention..” Head position, for instance, dictates balance. In both sports, you need to keep you head as still as possible for improved efficiency and results. Our guest for this Members Only episode is World Famous Triathlon Swim Coach Kevin Koskella. Because swimming is the opening event, efficiency and energy conservation is critical to get you to the more arduous and demanding running and cycling legs of a triathlon. Similar to what golf coaches say, practicing with a purpose will bring on positive results, where clubbing ball after ball from a bucket won’t show noticeable improvement. Kevin also advocates Yoga to make you a better, more flexible athlete, which we've discussed many times.

Kevin also hosts the TriSwimCoach podcast and regularly emails tips on efficiency from http://triswimcoach.com

The next four episodes are from my recent trip to Oregon. While at Bandon Dunes, I sat down for interviews with the Director of Instruction providing insights on playing links courses, and my caddie, who also carries a bag on the Champions Tour, sharing stories from inside the ropes. Then episodes #400 and #401 for Members Only, I head to Portland for dinner with one of our favorite teachers, Jim Waldron of Balance Point Golf Schools.

GOLF SMARTER #396 - “Golf Channel does a great job, but we want to give our audience more what of what they want in programming and lifestyle”. Jamie Bosworth is a former teaching pro who recognized a void in Golf TV programming. Along with a savvy group of investors he has built an entirely new network of content delivered via online and cable that recognizes we want more than competition and lessons. Women golfers especially appreciate this unique approach. Is the Golf Channel good or bad for Back9Network? Listen to Jamie and host Fred Greene discuss why, in the long run, you’ll end up spending more time watching Back9Network.

Next up For Members Only, Triathlon Swim Coach Kevin Koskella will share how swimming can improve your golf game!

This episode is brought to you by Audible. For a free audiobook of your choice, go to audiblepodcast.com/golfsmarter.

Golf Smarter For Members Only #395 - Drivers sell. The new adjustable Drivers sell REALLY well. But will they make a difference in your game? Club Fitter Nick Manzano for The Golf Mart and host Fred Greene walk down a wall of drivers in the San Rafael, CA store to discuss what is unique about each of the different 2013 Drivers. We also discuss purchasing used clubs, last year’s models, or getting your clubs repaired.

The Golf Mart is part of the World Wide Golf Shops group that includes The Golf Mart, Roger Dunn Golf Shops, Van's Golf Shops, and Golfers' Warehouse with stores across the USA and online shopping at WorldWideGolfShops.com.

If you enjoy this 2 part conversation or are just a fan of golf equipment, check out the books by Tom Wishon that Nick refers to multiple times. The books are available in our Golfers’Mart at Golf Smarter.com

Jul 23, 2013

GOLF SMARTER #394- Getting fitted for clubs will improve your game, but many fear that custom fitting means added cost. Custom Club Fitter Nick Manzano has operated his own custom club making business and been involved with the manufacturing of knockoffs, but recently he's chosen the path of many club fitters by going to work for a golf specialty store, or what he calls a "big box golf store". GOLF SMARTER host Fred Greene met with Nick at The Golf Mart in San Rafael, CA, to discuss the advantages that he offers the average golfer of expertise, detailed fitting specs, and getting to choose from the top name brand clubs. Better than custom fitters working from their garage or even your courses' Pro Shop, The Golf Mart has relationships with ALL manufacturers so that you have the widest selection to choose from when you're in the market for new clubs.

The Golf Mart is part of the World Wide Golf Shops group that includes The Golf Mart, Roger Dunn Golf Shops, Van's Golf Shops, and Golfers' Warehouse with stores across the USA and online shopping at WorldWideGolfShops.com.

In part2 of our conversation For Members Only, Nick and Fred spend nearly an hour on the showroom floor discussing most of the Drivers that are available today and what makes each special.

This episode is brought to you by Audible. For a free audiobook of your choice, go to audiblepodcast.com/golfsmarter.

#393 for Members Only - Ken Doherty returns for part 2 of our in-studio conversation that covers a wide range of topics that are top of mind, and others brought up by listeners. First we discuss the various programs and recent decisions by the USGA. Do they really want to “Grow The Game”?! Host Fred Greene sees the new “While I’m Still Young” campaign as condescending, but as a Head Golf Professional, Ken welcomes any help to pick up pace of play. We also address the anchored putter issue and how it impacts seniors and those with other physical limitations. Ken answers a question from a listener about how much playing time for a 10 year old is appropriate. Lastly we get into mechanics and “intent” on playing bunkers, both green-side and fairway traps.

Editor’s note: Fred referred to a previous guest from The Palms in La Quinta as J.D. Salinger. Ah, hello? Fred, where's your head?!?? J.D. Salinger is the author of “Catcher in the Rye”. J.D. Ebersberger (episode #371) is the COO and Director of Golf at The Palms.

Wow, how time flies! We’re sneaking up to episode #400! Let me know if you’d like a replay of a specific interview from the archives or get a guest to return.

Jul 9, 2013

#392 - Ken Doherty - Head Golf Professional at Marin Country Club returns to discuss how much your intent impacts the mechanics of hitting the ball. Whether you’re hitting irons, hybrids, woods, driver, or bunkers doesn’t matter. As long as you focus on a target and are clear about your intent, then you can stop thinking about mechanics which will free you to hit better shots.

Next episode is for Members Only episode with Ken returning to focus on the difference between hitting from fairway and greenside bunkers.

Check the blog at GolfSmarter.com to read about the legal settlement between Aimpoint Putting and Vector Putting as to who owns the intellectual property.
